NASA Acres Attends 2023 Commodity Classic

March 8, 2023 - Written By Keelin Haynes

NASA Acres will be joining other NASA scientists at the 2023 Commodity Classic, the nation’s largest farming convention.

Members of the NASA Acres Consortium will be presenting their recent research  in a variety of areas including AI-informed agricultural sustainability and satellite-enabled plant disease detection. We will also be leading demonstrations of NASA’s EO-based operational tools and participating in “Ask a NASA Scientist” discussion sessions.

On Wednesday morning, Karen St. Germain, the Director of NASA Earth Science Division, Brad Doorn, the Program Manager of NASA’s Agriculture and Water Resources Program Areas, and Alyssa Whitcraft, the Director of NASA Acres will formally introduce the Consortium at a What’s New session. Those attending in person can stop into the session in room W208 at 9:15 am.

NASA will also have a large presence in the Commodity Classic exhibit hall where the NASA booth and Hyperwall will provide a variety of activities, entertainment, and free NASA-branded goodies for attendees of all ages.

NASA Acres Consortium members Katie Gold and Sheng Wang are scheduled to give talks on the NASA Hyperwall on the use of satellite imagery to detect plant diseases and evaluate the effectiveness of different sustainability agriculture techniques. They’ll be joined by more than dozen other Hyperwall presenters discussing recent advancements in how NASA data is revolutionizing nitrogen management and irrigation decisions; stabilizing commodity markets; and improving awareness of where and which crops are being grown across the U.S.

Attendees are also invited to sit in on demos of NASA-data based tools that are helping farmers and other stakeholders better analyze evapotranspiration, crop health, and irrigation scheduling.

Several NASA staff and scientists are also sitting down with attendees during two “Ask a NASA Scientists” sessions during the conference where they will be available to answer any questions the public might have while also learning more about the conditions that U.S. farmers are facing in their operations.

For those who are unable to attend the Commodity Classic or would like to follow up with the presentations, demos, and other material from the meeting, NASA is happy to provide free access to the NASA Virtual Science Booth which will contain a number of pre-recorded presentations and demos as well as a variety of other NASA + Agriculture resources.
